The Silent Supper by Áine P. Massie

Guest Post: The Silent Supper by Áine P. Massie

“Are you really cooking for the dead?” Nicholas asked, coming into the kitchen.

“Of course.  Declán and Geoff are working on the Jack-o’-Lanterns in the back yard for later.  I already have everything else,” Anya explained, again.  Nicholas could not seem to wrap his head around a vampire making a special meal for the dead.  It just didn’t seem to mesh with his view of death, vampires, and spirits.  The fact he was raised Anglican probably didn’t help his confusion.

Moving around the kitchen as if it was a natural place for her to be, Anya worked on her preparations.

“Okay, I’ll bite,” Nicholas teased with a little snap of his teeth.  “What are you making?  Other than a mess with the potatoes.”

“I’m making boxty with baked apples and nuts because Kayla and Declán asked me to.  I’m also making Barmbrack.  All traditional foods.  If you really want to be around and useful you could help me set the table and the ancestors’ altar up.”  She was smiling, happy with her preparations and work.

Once she tidied up a bit the two of them set out for the formal dining room.  Working in tandem made everything go faster and more smoothly.

The tablecloth was black and white, half and half, which had knot-work in the opposite color down the centre making a single design.  Gesturing to the side Anya explained the setup for Nicholas’s sake.  “The settings alternate black with silver accenting then the next setting is white with gold.  The candles go in the centre.  They have already been dressed with oil and herbs so all you have to do it place them.  I’ll work on the other side as well as set up the altar.

“The head of the table will be our ‘place of honour’ for the spirits so please be extra careful with it.  Also, the candle there – the black and white one with metallic trimming is set there.  I’ll check its placement, so don’t worry.”

Nicholas looked at her like she was slightly off but did as instructed, helping to set up her special ‘silent supper’ as she had explained it to him.  He watched her as he moved around the space, noting how easily and sure she was of her placements, intentions, and work.

As she was setting up the altar Declán entered the room, sliding in behind her.  “Mmmm, it looks amazing in here.  See you even got Nic in on it,” he noted, a slight laugh in his voice.  He suddenly went still, staring at what she had just placed.  “Where did you get that?” he whispered.

“Mo ghrá, you mother sent it to me.  Kayla called and let her know what we were doing and shortly after this arrived.”  Sitting now in a place of honour on the altar was a small shadow box with two sets of wedding rings, wrapped in pairs with ribbons.  She knew they were the rings from his grandparents.  His mother had kept them like this after their passings.  She had sent them – to be returned promptly after – as representatives for their ancestors.

“Never thought she’d part with those, even for a short time and especially not now,” he murmured, lightly tracing the edge of the ornate box.

“She said it was important for you to have these for your first supper away from home.  She was very helpful.  Now, go grab the small round table over there so I can set up the offerings to chose from that we will all, later, place on the altar.  You know how it’s done.”

Declán’s eyes shown awe as he moved around the area to set up the offerings stand next to the altar.  Just as he was finishing up Kayla came in, setting a single white rose on the altar.  “The flowers only just arrived, sorry.  Louie sent this in to add for you also Anya.  He said he didn’t know your family but that this should work for your honouring them.”  What she handed over surprised Anya and nearly brought her to tears.  It was a Celtic Tree of Life, ornately carved in exquisite detail.  Hanging on branches and roots were tiny ‘ornaments’ that held the names of those he did know the names of – like her lost husband, Braden – and symbols for those he didn’t – tiny markers for her mother and father.  It also bore the House symbol.  “We don’t have things to mark your family so he had this crafted for you.”

“I- He . . .” she choked, not seeming to be able to work out what to say.  As she reverently placed the carving the blood tears finally spilt over, silently streaking her luminous, pale skin.

As Anya set up the last of the ritual items she sent Declán to fetch everyone that was attending.  She would wait to cast circle and begin until everyone was at their places.  Once invoked, no one was to speak again until the dinner was over.

Placing the holy items at the four corners – spear, sword, cauldron and stone for the four great treasures of the gods – she waited, centring herself for the coming work.

Once the others were standing at their places she began.

Taking up her besom and sweeping from the circle all unwanted energy she spoke, nearly singing, “By the force of love.  I banish all ill and negativity.  Allowing only purity, love, and truth remain.

Beginning in the east, she walked the circle (outer most point) pointing the athame (ritual blade) at the ground and said, continuing in her near singing tone, “By light and sound.  Of deities and truths.  I call upon the essence that is the divine to witness this rite.”

She returned to the east, again walking the circle (first inner circle) sprinkling the circle area with the herb/water mix she made and blessed earlier.  “By love and giving.  Gentleness and strength.  I call the power of life, Goddess come.”

Finally, she walks the circle (second inner circle) one last time, waving the smoke of the incense to spread the smoke.  “By grace and power.  Of softness and might.  I call that which is the divine male.  Come great God.”

Pausing a moment she calls the quarters silently before turning to gesture everyone to sit.  Then with one last vocal flourish she begins the supper, “Welcome to this place of protection and growth; between the Realms and between all times.  So Mote It Be!”  She uses her voice to chime three times and the meal progresses in reverent silence.  Each participant listening within to discern any messages from the deceased, any prayers or messages, jotting them down on the paper provided.

When all have eaten or drank their fill and the last fork has been put down, Anya again intones the ringing the bell with her voice, signaling the end of the silent portion of the meal.

“Thank you for sharing a meal with us, your humble descendants.”

Each takes a moment to either aloud or silently within, say thank you and send their love to those that have passed before.  Before the ritual ends and the circle is broken, the prayers and messages to the deceased are burned in a small cauldron sitting on the altar.

“Each who wishes to, please place your offerings on the altar of the ancestors before heading out to the revelry planned.  I will sit the tray out for the spirits once everyone has had their time.”

Thank you for joining us to take a peek within the House at this time of year.  Mistress Anya is yes, a vampire, but she was never taught to “be” a normal vampire.  She still holds to her human morals, mostly, and her faith.  I hope you enjoy the quick look with.

Author Interview with Áine P. Massie

Áine P. Massie, Author of Blood's Voice and Blood Bound

I would like to welcome Áine P. Massie to Better Read Than Dead today. She has been kind enough to swing by for a great interview. Also, Aine has been kind enough to provide us with a delicious scene revolving around a Wiccan ritual...The Silent Supper. Be sure to check it out. It brought tears to my eyes.

Kristin: Tell us a little bit about yourself and where you live?
Áine: I’m originally from Florida, USA.  I now live in Wisconsin, happily away from the sun poisoning and heat J.  I live with my four younger children while writing, playing, and enjoying life with mini-monsters.  I have always loved books and, in particular, vampires, mythology, and the ‘unusual’.  I spend most of my time either with my children or writing.  When not doing that I’m reading, working on training, my healing stones, or ritual.

Kristin: What is the first book that really caught your attention?
Áine: The first?  I can remember The Cat in the Hat and The Cat in the Hat Comes Back.  I’m a big fan of Seuss… not just for his wacky kids’ books but because of his life story.  If anyone can teach perseverance, it’s Seuss.

When I was older Anne Rice’s Interview with a Vampire captured my interest and I started reading anything vampiric I could find.  That tapered off as family became more of a focus.  There are so many good books out now that I don’t even know about much less have read.

Kristin: Did you read much as a teenager?
Áine: Constantly.  I loved to read!  I had a large bookshelf and was enamored with books.  I preferred paranormal even then.

Kristin: If you couldn’t be an author, but anything else…what would you be?
Áine: Well, I’m not just an author.  I am first and foremost a mom.  I have 6 bio-kids and one step and LOVE them all terribly.
*I love that you always place your kiddo’s first.*

Kristin: Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Áine: Reality, dreams, personal experiences, books, etc.  Inspiration comes from all parts of life, or at least it does for me.  Everything from my friends that either are or were closeted to the horrors on the news, or even short lived shows that I loved… it all blends in the mind and heart and comes out on paper.

Kristin: What’s the name of your most recently published book?
Áine: Blood Bound is my current to-be-released (release has been delayed a week L ).  So my only published is Blood’s Voice, published June 1, 2011.  So far, it’s been a terrific experience. I’ve gotten some very positive feedback on the book and met a lot of wonderful people in the blogosphere.
*I’m sorry Blood Bound got delayed. I have read it and it is phenominal!*

Kristin: Who is your favorite character from this book and why?
Áine: I would have to answer the same as last time.  Even though the books are written from Anya’s POV – so far – my fav character is Declán.  He’s just so laid back and yummy.
*Ah, Declan. I love him. He is so loving and caring, strong and sensual. The perfect gentleman.

Kristin: Independently published or commercially published?
Áine: Indy Published.

Kristin: If independent…did you attempt to get commercially published?
Áine: Not on this book.  I would love to have both books re-published commercially but at this time don’t have an agent.

Kristin: Do you have any words of wisdom for aspiring writers?
Áine: Write what you love and let yourself love what you write.  We often get so caught up in what others say about our work that we forget that they are only a small voice and possibly not the target audience.  Take the good from the negative and ignore the rest.  Keep writing, that’s the most important thing.  Keep writing and stay true to your vision.

Kristin: What is the most useful advice you received while writing any book?
Áine: “Let me see more of the love building.”  At one point I had taken out a lot of the lovey/relationship stuff, fearing it dragged the story down too much and thankfully I was smacked and told to put it right back where it belonged, lol.  The story wouldn’t have been ‘real’ without the love.  TY guys J
*Oh, I am so glad you chose to leave the love and relationships in the book. I am also glad that you built on the original relationship. So intense and unique.*

Fun Stuff

Kristin: The apocalypse is coming…what do you do?
Áine: Live what life I have to the fullest with all those I love and cherish.
*Agreed*

Kristin: If you were stranded on an island, name the 5 things you could not live without?
Áine: I would say my kids but I’d never want them stranded anywhere.  My books, laptop, caffeine!!!, cell, oh, and all the cords and electricity needed to run them. ;)
*Definitely caffeine. And good thinking on the kids. Better they are safe.*

Kristin: What 5 things are within your reach right now? No cheating?
Áine: My laptop; a stack of books to be read; mp3 player playing a mix of Godsmack, Muse, Blue October, and Three Days Grace; my cell; and a picture of my 7 yo daughter receiving a reading award.

Kristin: Favorite book ever?
Áine: That changes too often.  I love books, most all books… I don’t have a favourite.

Kristin: Ultimate bad boy crush? (TV, Movies, or Books)
Áine: Louie from Interview with the Vampire, the book.  The movie was good but I love the book!

Kristin: Ultimate good guy crush? (TV, Movies, or Books)
Áine: Seeley Booth, Bones.  Sexy, sweet, heroic, yet venerable and flawed…

*A woman with great taste. I love Seeley. I have missed him dearly over the last few months. The season premiere is Thursday! Yippee!!!

Kristin: Favorite food?
Áine: Sagg Paneer

Kristin: Favorite Movie?
Áine: Princess Bride.

Kristin: Favorite TV show?
Áine: Probably Bones.  Followed closely by Dexter. (No pointing out the irony there, lol.)

Kristin: Favorite Song?
Áine: Voodoo by God Smack
*I went to a concert once upon a time. It was a spur of the moment thing and something I didn’t typically do. It was so much fun though.

Kristin: Favorite singer or band?
Áine: Right now?  Muse.

Kristin: One food you would never try?
Áine: Chitterlings.

Kristin: The most exotic food you have ever eaten?
Áine: Alligator probably.

Kristin: Day on the beach or snow skiing down a mountain?
Áine: Snow skiing, hands down.  I love snow and the mountains, plus the last time I spent any real time at the beach I ended up with sun poisoning – not fun!

Kristin: Campfire with smores or curled up in front of the fireplace?
Áine: Curled up in front of the fireplace, preferably with a nice cuddle-buddy.  :D

Kristin: If you could move anywhere on this Earth, where would it be?
Áine: Ireland.  I would love to at least visit if not outright move there.

Kristin: Health nut or junk food junkie?
Áine: Honestly?  Depends on the day.  I am a vegetarian and try to eat healthfully but I do so love BBQ chips and cappuccino, lol.

Kristin: Two books you think everyone should read. (Yes, you can and should include yours.)
Áine: Blood’s Voice + Blood Bound
Anything by Dr. Seuss… (does anyone else notice a theme here, lol)

Kristin: Are there any blogs or websites you frequent?
Áine: Better Read than Dead, of course.  Love it here!
Readinista, Intoxicated by Books, Laced Little Muffin’s, Earth’s Book Nook, Darlene’s Book Nook, The Writer’s Voice, Breaking Bookshelves, Book Breathers, Close Encounters of the Night Kind, Throwing Books, Geeky Girl Reviews, and too many others to think of right now.  I love blogs!
*Ahhh…thank you so much. I love having you here! You are always so kind to comment on different posts. I love hanging around your blog too. So much fun stuff going on over there.

Kristin: Places my readers can stalk you?

Áine, thank you so much for stopping by for a visit! I have really enjoyed our visit today. I hope you will stop by again soon. Be sure you read The Silent Supper.

4 Stars!!!

Blood Bound is the second book in the series House Millar. I have to say that I liked this book much better than its predecessor. Everything just seemed to mesh much better. The characters found themselves and fell into their lives in a more comfortable manner. The writing, while still formal, seemed to flow at a better pace and didn’t seem so stiff. It fit the characters. And the characters…wow. Áine added so many more wonderful characters.

Anya has so much going on in Blood Bound, by the end, I found myself hoping she would get some time to simply enjoy her boys and this wonderful new life she has made for herself and others. She is forced to spend much of this book establishing House Millar among the council and establishing her presence among the other Houses. And…does she ever make her presence known. Each time Anya, Declan, and Nicholas would go to a council meeting or other activity, I pictured Anya in front, flanked by two extremely sexy guys dressed in black leather…talk about hot. I would almost have wanted to trade places with her…except her life seems much too complicated for me. Like I said…she deserves some fun.

The chemistry between Anya, Declan, and Nicholas was still amazing, yet things were often stressed. Poor Nicholas…I just can’t understand the boy. He loves both Anya and Declan more than anyone in the world, but the minute anyone new steps into the picture…her freaks. Completely jealous…without cause. Declan is still Declan – kind, supportive, laid-back, and just lets things happen as they will. No stress…I would think as a guardian and a college student, he would be the one constantly uptight and worried. Nope, not Declan.

Speaking of new…Áine brought a whole slew of new characters to the table. Both questionably good and positively bad.  I think my favorite is Jason, a deaf vampire. Who knew, right? At first he seemed completely creepy but then he was much more fun and flirtatious. His role at House Millar is unique and important. Of course Anya welcomed him with open arms as she does everyone. I think the rest of the House is going to have to start trusting her opinion…she seems to have a good head on her shoulders.

The other new “thing” introduced in Blood Bound is a new relationship between Louie and…well, let’s just say someone in the House. This was a unique take on any relationship and made me so happy.

Áine gave me even more reasons than ever to love her strong and charismatic cast of characters. Each stepped up their game in the newest book. I will be looking forward to the next installment of House Millar, which I understand will not be from Anya’s point of view. Sounds interesting.

If you love a good vampire story…Blood’s Voice and Blood Bound are great choices.

I'm not going to give any favorite quotes this time; because, the copy of Blood Bound I read was completely unedited and what I might quote might not even make the cut.

My Teaser:

I had already caused more death to our own numbers than most hunters managed in their careers and definitely in higher combat concentrations. My mind continued down this dismal internal trail as I stood looking out my window, my back to the door.

Interview with Declan and Nicholas from Blood's Voice

I want to start by welcoming all my readers to the Blood's Voice and Blood Bound Virtual Book Tour! Today I am having two sexy men stop by for an interview you don't want to miss. On October 25, I will be reviewing Blood Bound, the second installment of House Millar, and hosting a giveaway! Then, on November 1, stop back by for an interview with Aine P Massie...the amazing woman behind House Millar.

Welcome Declan and Nicholas. We thank you for being here today. I have been looking forward to this interview for quite sometime now. I really enjoyed your characters in Blood's Voice and Blood Bound.

Declán, wearing his leather Guardian attire – from the bracer on his wrist and, leather pants to his wicked looking executioner boots – just screams sexy and dangerous, settles down on the couch next to Nicholas.  It seemed to take him a little to decide to sit, having checked the area out first.

Nicholas, who seemed much calmer and more collected, simply smiles after resting his arm across the back of the couch, behind Declán.  He’s decked out in a charcoal gray, double breasted waist coat over a black silk t-shirt, with matching, tailored snug fitting slacks and converse hi-tops.

So Declan, tell me, Anya felt an immediate pull toward you her first day in school, how did you feel about her?

“Honestly?  I thought she was the most beautiful person I had ever met.  I was glad it was ASL class as I’m not really sure I could have talked to her.  I know she thought I was refusing to look her in the eyes but really I was trying my best not to turn beat red and stutter.  She still affects me sometimes like that when I look at her.  She has the most beautiful green eyes, long auburn hair, and well . . .
“I’ve met other vampire women now, and while they are beautiful, there is just something different about her.  Ethereal, regal . . .” Looking down he stops speaking for a moment.  “Sorry.  I get carried away easily when it come to her.”

  • Kristin: I can understand being tongue tied around such beautiful people. I'm not even sure to say with you very sexy men here...and I'm the interveiwer.

I understand that you were keeping a very important secret at the time. That was very kind. You really would do anything for those you love, wouldn’t you?

“I was.  I don’t know how kind it was though.  My twin sister and her girlfriend needed my protection and help.  They were my best friends.  What else could I do?  We lived in a small community and we all knew that them being together would cause problems.  I hate that they needed my help though.  Their gender shouldn’t matter!  If you knew them you would know how much they love each other and that, for them, they are perfect together.”

Nicholas, you knew Anya before the accident. Has she changed since that time and, if so, how?

“Yes Kristin, I knew her before her memory loss.  We were an informal couple for three decades before then.  As to how she has changed.  I am not sure how to explain it.  In some ways she is every inch the same woman that I loved and lost before.  In other ways she is very different.

“She has always had a love and protective near-obsession of humans, especially the weaker ones.  My family and I refused to bring harm to humans but her view was even more so.

“I think the biggest change is her fear of self that she often struggles with.  She never feared her own power before.  She had trouble at times with the power of her voice thought it was my weaker then.  But, if you have read our first story you know how hard it was for her to deal with the idea of her feelings for Declán here.  I worried about her far more than I did about him.  Not because I didn’t care about him, obviously, but because she lacked faith in her ability to control her natural cravings.  She had not truly accepted who and what she was.  All that being said, she is still the most wonderful, loving woman I have ever known and love her eternally.”

You obviously had feelings for her from before, how did you feel about her friendship with Declan at first?

“Ha-ha.  Oh, I had feelings for her all right.  It was very hard at times to watch them become close because I feared I would never find a way into her heart again.  You see, once we love someone, it is for as long as we exist.  The fact she did not remember me did not change my love for her."

“My love for her is the very reason I worked to help her with her desires for Declán.  It was what she wanted and I wanted her happy, even if that wasn’t with me.  Luckily, she chose us both.”

All three of you now share a blood bond and have strong feelings for each other. How do you guys feel about having to share Anya? I know she is a pretty special girl.

Nicholas gestured to Declán, allowing him to answer first.

“I love Anya very much, as I said earlier.  It never bothered me that she seemed to want Nicholas too.  Well, not in the jealous, ‘I own you’ kind of way.  I was scared she would get bored of me and want him more.  He’s gorgeous, in case you didn’t notice,” he added with a wink.  “But really, I don’t see it as sharing her as much as both of us being lucky enough to have her to love.  Nicholas isn’t competition, he’s . . . well, beyond being my boyfriend, he’s part of her soul.  I love and respect all of her, the part that loves him included.  Does that make sense?  Kayla still thinks I’m nuts some days, even though she adores Anya and Nicholas both.”

  • Kristin: That makes perfect sense Declan, and I think it makes you a wonderful man to accept and love her the way you do.

Lacing his fingers with Nicholas and giving a squeeze he whispered, “You’re turn dear.”

“Indeed.  Can’t tell he’s smitten can you,” Nicholas said with a laugh.  “I would never have considered sharing, as you put it, for anyone but her I don’t think.  Well, other than Declán of course but that is with her so it is all part of the same bond of love.

“Until I met Anya I had never emotionally engaged with anyone that I did not consider in a friend or parent role.  There was something about her that drew me in from the start and when I found her again . . . you just can’t walk away from part of your soul and she is that for me.  We were soul bound before her loss,” he said with a shrug.  “Declán is a special person, human or not.  I love them both.  For me, it’s that simple.  They are mine.”

Declan, can you tell us a little more about your role as a guardian?

“I am still learning a lot of what that means.  Being a Guardian means that I am a natural-born vampire hunter.  I don’t know what makes me that way though.  I mean, Kayla, my twin sister, isn’t a Guardian and I know that there were girl hunters before.

“I have a slightly unique take on what to do with my abilities and skills though.  I work with Nicholas here, partnered, to protect not just the humans in our area but Anya and the Vampire House she’s made.  From what I’ve learned, I’m not supposed to protect any vampires but well, they’re my lovers and family.  I have to!

“But, any that would harm any human in Anya’s territory or any in our House will not survive long.  Vampires that behave are fine but any that kill to feed or torture others like me I will happily introduce to my toys.”

“Behave Dec.  Pointing out how many weapons you have on you at any given point tends to freak most humans out.”  Turning back to face Kristin he continues, “He is always armed and ready to defend others.  He doesn’t see himself like the rest of us do.  He’s a warrior and hero of your kind, child.  Just standing at Anya’s side for meeting is hard for him if it’s with those who have a more traditional diet.  I don’t like it or approve of the others but he truly has trouble not staking all of them.  Makes me just that much gladder that he’s on our side.”

Nicholas, after you all moved a lot of things happened. Are you and Anya feeling any better and will there be any long term effects from the poisoning?

Nicholas shuddered slightly; a flash of pain crossed his features before he controlled himself again and answered.  “I am feeling much better now, thank you.  I have no lingering effects from the poisoning, thankfully.  Anya was not as lucky.  Thanks to her being worse off before Louie healed her and with her mind having already been so damaged before, she will always be slightly off.  Or, we believe she will.  She finds the oddest things still funny or interesting.  She still phases out off and on, which is not normal for even a traumatized vampire.

“Don’t make the mistake of thinking that her being slightly . . . unique in thought makes her weaker.  She is still one of the most powerful creatures I’ve even known.”

Okay guys, you knew this question was coming. That love scene, between the three of you… wow. Smoking hot. We want details…anything you want to share?

Declán started laughing.  “Oh, of all things to ask about.  Nicholas refused to allow our author to write too much detail.”  Dropping his voice a little and leaning in, he murmurs, “He’s a bit of a prude that way.”
Nicholas sputters at the word ‘prude.’  “I am not a prude.  I just think some things are not their business.  Not everyone wants their sex lives shown to others, thank you very much.”

“See what I mean,” Declán counters with a huge grin on his face.  “Now, he’ll ask to bite-link with Anya to see her memories of her with me, but oh noooo . . .  we can’t share his.

“In all fairness, our author also wanted to keep the story mild enough that she felt alright letting her older boys, and their friends, read our book.  They aren’t adults yet so it was easy for Nicholas to get his way.”

  •  Kristin: That is certainly understandable, young people have such impressionable minds.

Is there anything you guys want to tell us about what is coming in Blood Bound?

“I hope every one likes the second installment in our lives.  This one was a bit different for her to tell as so much happens in such a short time.  I am still not sure how Anya dealt with all the changes and happenings so well.  Just keep an eye on the counsel – not every one there is all they seem to be.”

“Sadly, too true Nic.  She did well with the challenges though.  I just hope they all like bonding that happens,” Declán adds, fidgeting slightly with the Claddagh ring on Nicholas’ left hand.

It’s been great having you two fine specimens of men today. You are welcome to drop by anytime you would like. We would love to have you again. Any parting words?

“Thank you,” they say together and the bust out laughing.  “Sorry,” Nicholas continues.  “Thank you for inviting us.  I hope your readers enjoy our story.”  Nicholas takes Kristin’s hand, bending to kiss the back of it before giving her a fanged smile on his way out. *SWOONS*

Rising to leave, Declán extends his hand to shake and wishes Kristin well.  “Thanks, this was fun.   Also, if any of them have questions, let them know we will stop by later today and answer any they leave for either of us.”

Thanks again to Declan and Nicholas for taking their time to visit. And as Declan mentioned...if you have any other questions, be sure to leave them in the comments and we might possibly be lucky enough to pry a few more answers out of these two handsome men.
