  Q. If I Tell affected me on so many levels. Ms. Gurtler concocted a story riddled with complications varying from racial identities to social awkwardism to sexual identities. This story of a young girl who struggles just to survive each day, touched every nerve in my body. The few friends Jaz has she keeps at a distance, ultimately pushing them away causing her own loneliness.

• Jasmine Evans is the only biracial person at a tiny school in Washington. Talk about a girl with trust issues…she has them all. Her dad never wanted her, her mom left her with her grandmother, her friends tried to drown her in the fourth grade, seven years later they still torture her, she was nearly raped by a friend, she busted her best friend kissing her pregnant mother’s boyfriend. Can the new boy in town break down the walls she has built or will he too betray her?
• Lacey is her best friend who drinks a little too much and throws herself at anyone who looks her way. Even people who are off limits.
• Nathan just so happens to be Lacey’s roomate and he has an eye on Jaz.
• Simon is Jaz’s mom’s boyfriend. They are expecting a baby and Jasmine would be excited if she could just forget what she saw.
• Ashley is the one of Jasmine’s friends who doesn’t want anything from her. The problem is Jaz can’t bring herself to trust anyone.
• Jackson is the new bad boy in town with a reputation he earned. He appears honest and wants to be Jaz’s friend. Problem is Jaz may want more than he can offer.

If I Tell is written in the first person from Jaz’s point of view. With Jaz’s multitudes of emotion you are in for quite a ride. The girl who appears to be a loner hiding away picking at a guitar is hiding so much beneath the circle. She grew up a biracial girl in a white household and nobody to help her discover the other half of her. Her granddad is the one person that she could always talk to, but he passed away. This aspect of the story is probably the only part that I couldn’t connect with, not being biracial and all.

Jackson wants nothing more than to be Jaz’s friend but breaking through her tough exterior will prove to be much more difficult than he expects. Never fear though…Jackson is one patient kid who always gets what he wants.

There is so much in this book that any teenager could relate to. I highly recommend it. The writing is powerful and pulls feelings from you that may not be expected. It is the type of book that really makes you think. There were times I had to put the book down because I was embarrassed for Jaz and then there were times I cried for her. In the end…I was just proud of her for owning up to her mistakes and apologizing to those she hurt.

It's Thoughtful Thursday again here at Better Read Than Dead. Time to open your mind and voice your opinion.

 

In honor of Banned Book Week, I would like to ask this question...

If you hear a book is challenged or banned does it discourage you from reading it, or are you a rebellion at heart? Do you believe in the adage..."The only bad press, is no press at all?" 

My Thoughts...

I am a tried and true rebellion. Have been since my dad told me to eat a worm when I was three. Last thing he told me to do that I actually did. HeHeHeHe. Taught him.

The first thing I did after I found anti-Harry Potter pamphlets at my place of employment...bought and read them. I had to know what the big deal was...duh!

First thing I did when people were boycotting Disney because of their domestic partner practices...bought every movie they made.

First thing I did when all the hoopla occurred with Charlie Sheen...watched more 2 and 1/2 Men.

I admit to being a rebellion, and yes, I am buying or at least reading any book that has been challenged. I have read a lot of the more recent books on the challenged list...and I loved everyone of them.

Jenna-Lynn Duncan begins Hurricane several days before Hurricane Katrina destroys New Orleans. The prologue had me hooked and I found each page full of exciting events and trivia about New Orleans’ culture. I have always wanted to visit New Orleans and now I know I have to, and yes I know this is a purely fictional tale. The characters brought this story to life, allowing you to fall into the story.

• Adriana is a seventeen year old young woman who suffers from loneliness and the insecurities of feeling out of place in her normal world. She begins having precognitions the night before the first day of school which will prove to be true.
• Nikki is one of Adriana’s only friends – a boy-crazy friends at that.
• Marie is another friend of Adriana’s that makes a couple of appearances in the story.
• Hayden Boudreaux is one of the sexy brothers  juswhot moved into town. He has every girl swooning when he walks by. When it comes to Adriana he runs hot and cold…you never know what to expect.
• Luke Boudreaux is the second half of the brotherly duo and it doesn’t sound like he lacking in the looks department either.
• Elizabeth and Christopher are Luke and Hayden’s parents. They look fondly on Adriana, welcoming her openly into their family of mystery.
• Marie Laveau is the Voodoo Queen who cursed generations to a life of murder and immortality.

I fell in love with this mysterious and haunting tale from the very beginning. The prologue is written from one of Adriana’s kidnappers point of view. This took you into the middle of the story so even if the beginning seemed to drag a little – you had to keep reading. This is one of the best uses of a prologue that I have seen in a long time. Bravo to you Ms. Duncan.

New Orleans is one of those places that is naturally surrounded by mystery and culture…from Voodoo to Mardi Gras. The events that took place in Hurricane transported you into that mysterious culture. There were points that I was completely creeped out and points that I wanted nothing more but to get in my car and drive there. And the description leading up to Hurricane Katrina…well it took me back to that time. I felt like I was the one preparing to evacuate.

The Boudreaux brothers are anything but the boys next door. When their attention falls on the wallflower, Adriana, she becomes extremely curious. Not that they gave her any answers, but she asked her questions all the same. I really liked Adriana as a protagonist, she was strong – not in a kick your butt sort of way…but she didn’t whine and she just went with the flow. Once she figured out who she could trust, she was loyal without question or concern.

This is a highly recommended book that will transport you to another place.

I truly enjoyed this fantastical book and fell deeply in love with the characters. I found them creeping into my thoughts when I wasn’t reading and they carried me away when I was.

• Jen – is a bit naive when it comes to magic…or maybe she knows nothing about magic. When she happens across some students playing on deck, she finds there is nothing normal about them. And the things she learns about herself…unimaginable.
• Dani (Danio) – is a water elemental, a noreid. He is always game for a practical joke and loves to give everyone a hard time. However, underneath the fun loving guy is a wealth of strength and secrets.
• Mariana – just happens to be a mermaid. She has been the only girl intermingling with the magics on this journey through South America.
• TS (Tethys) – could be none other than the overbearingly big werewolf. Human during the day, a wolf at night. TS is loyal and caring when it comes to his friends. Once you have crept your way into his friendship…he’s not likely to ever forget you.
• Thomas – well, let’s just say we have a lot to learn about this young man. He and TS are as close as brothers…closer even. Their history is one for the books. Thomas is the brooding character and he has plenty of reasons.
• Charlie – is a fire elemental, an Imp. He is flaming in more than one way. I loved Charlie. He’s fun-loving but fiercely protective of those he cares about.
• Jon – adopted Thomas after a terrible accident left him without family. Jon is a wizard and an agent with the MES (Magical Enforcement and Security) Agency.
• Mark – is Charlie’s roommate on the ship. Unfortunately he falls into the hands of the wrong person.

Semester Aboard begins with a group of college students spending a semester touring South America via ship. Jen…just an innocent human, happens to see something she shouldn’t have seen and now she will have to pay the consequences…good or bad. As Elizabeth Kirke takes us on an intriguing journey, we learn the many secrets that her characters are hiding. There will be magic, adventure, action, love and deception.

Things I loved: The interaction between Elizabeth’s characters feels real, not forced. The characters that are in love have been together for longer than I have been alive. The relationship Jen wants happens very slowly…if at all. Each time I sat down to read…I was pulled into the lives of these characters. Even though Semester Aboard was told in first person from Jen’s point of view…I definitely did not feel lost when it came to what the other characters were feeling. When someone got hurt…I felt it. When someone was happy…I felt it. When someone was in trouble…I wanted to run out and help.

Semester Aboard was different from most of the other books I have read. It was more of an urban fantasy than a romance. The interaction between so many paranormal races was interesting to say the least.

Things that were just so-so: At times I felt like the book dragged. It could possibly be my impatience in wanting to know how things would work out. I have that problem a lot which is why I can’t put a book down once I have started it. I also felt like Jen sat by and let a lot of things happen when she should have been helping more.
Favorite Parts:

I looked up and froze. Thomas and Dani were still sitting on the bed and half on them – half off the bed, was a wolf. At least it looked like one. I had seen wolves in the zoo before, but this was nothing like them. – pg 44

How could I possibly just run away and leave him here to die? And then he pulled me closer and kissed me. For a moment my brain screeched to a halt. This couldn’t be happening. This was the wrong time, the worst possible time, for a kiss. The guy I had been trying to keep from developing a huge crush on was kissing me and we were both about to die. - pg 317

Tell us a bit about it and why you keep on revisiting it? I do have a couple of series that I go to at different times. If I am feeling down...I tend to reread the Twilight Saga. I initially read them when I was going through a difficult time and they made me feel a little better...so that is why I still read them when I'm down.  I have just finished the Sweet Series by Maya Banks (NOT YA) and I can already tell you that it is a series I will reread over and over again. I fell in love with the characters and would love to have everyone of them as my friends. They are wild, crazy, funny, but most of all...they love each other.You can find my review for Sweet Possession HERE!

Banned Book Week!!!

I am super excited to be a part of the Banned Book Week Hop hosted by I am a Reader, Not a Writer and I Read Banned Books!  Banned Book Week Banned Book Week runs from September 24 - October 1 and is a celebration of our right to read and write at our own discretion. Do I think this is important…absolutely. In the United States we are guaranteed certain rights…the freedom of press and the freedom of speech are two of these rights granted to us.

While I absolutely disagree with book banning, I do believe that we have to be aware of the books out there and make wise decisions to what we read and to what we allow our children to read. Know yourself and know your boundaries. These are the two things you can do to assure that you get the most from your reading experience.

I am going to approach this subject from a parent’s view point, since I am just that, a parent. I am an extremely liberal reader and encourage my children to read anything and everything they can, become well rounded, and understand the differences in the world around them. That being said…I am completely aware of what they read and we often have very open discussions about reading. Generally, I have read anything and everything they are reading, and if not, I am probably going to read it. Reading is one of the most discussed topics in our house.

I believe it is my responsibility as a parent to know what my children are reading. I do not believe that the schools, libraries, or government should be held responsible for these choices. We are always looking for someone else to blame and honestly…parents need to take these responsibilities. See, while some might complain that their children can get a hold of questionable literature at public libraries, what happens if that book is banned and I, an adult, would like to read it? Should it be banned from me also? What if I believe that it is okay for my children to read these books? Is it right that they are unable to check this book out?

I do understand the worries about children getting ahold of books that are too mature for them…let’s put them in the correct school libraries. I honestly do not have a problem with school libraries picking and choosing the books that are available to kids. But public libraries are a completely different story…because they are public for both adults and children. Also, when it comes to school reading lists, I have found that most of the questionable books are optional and there are other choices for the children to choose from. If not, then yes it is certainly your right to voice your opinion about these things.

I live my life with a pretty simple rule…if you believe something is immoral or inappropriate then just don’t do it. Nobody should have to tell you it’s immoral…you have to know your own beliefs, your own limits, and follow them.

Thoughtful Thursday #3

So, it's that time again. Time for Thoughtful Thursdays. This weeks thought comes from an newsletter I subscribe to from author Holly Lisle.This question had me really thinking. I hope you will think a little and let me know your answer.

 Question:
What single thing in my working life would make me stand up and walk out of my job today, right now, even knowing that I would burn that bridge and never be able to go back? Well, for me this question is pretty easy to answer. Working in healthcare will make you see things in an entirely different way. Ethics and morals become much more important when peoples lives hang in the balance. It was while doing my pediatric rotation that I knew, without a doubt, that I could never work in pediatrics. Why, you ask? A lot of people would die to work in pediatrics...and I am supremely happy; because it means, I DON'T HAVE TO!  I have given birth to three children; one with special needs. And I love these children dearly, so much that I am completely unable to deal with any type of child abuse. I knew after only a few weeks into my rotation that I would never be able to keep my mouth shut in regards to the well-being of any child...much less tiny babies. 
So, I suppose my answer would be...knowledge of any abuse of children that was not investigated or unpunished would be one thing that would cause me to walk out of my job with no questions asked.

So, I am doing this a little bit backwards...but I am a little bit weird, so it all works out. I loved, and I mean loved, loved, this book. Honestly, it was the first of the Sweet Series that I had read and after finishing it...I went straight and bought the other four. And I loved all of them. However, I think Sweet Possession will always be my favorite. The sheer since of family and belonging is overwhelming in this group of somewhat dysfunctional characters. And I love them all!

• Connor Malone - is the last of his close friends to remain single. He is intense, snarky, gorgeous, and quite capable in many areas of expertise. His straight-laced nature paired with Lyric's party girl status provides for some hilarious dialogue and scenes.
• Lyric Jones - is a pop-star gone wild and now she is in trouble. She's unpredictable and tends to drive the rumors stirred up by the press. She has no self-preservation skills and no self-esteem; even though she comes across as confident.
• Kane - is an integral part of the security team that is hired to protect Lyric while she is in Houston. At first, I thought he was a complete ass, but now I adore him.
• RJ and Trent - are the only remaining members of Lyric's old security team. They have been up-close and personal with her and now their need is being questioned.
• Phillip - is Lyric's spokesperson from her record level. He has been keeping secrets that may endanger Lyric's life.
• Paul - is a jerk of a manager who holds a grudge. He holds information that could ruin Lyric's image and holds no compunctions about using it.
• Faith, Gray, Serena, Damon, Sam, Julie, Nathan, Micah, Angelina and Pop will all be detailed in each of their books. Just know that I truly want these people as my best friends. LOL!

Okay, so I was in love with this book from page one. I have read several reviews of people who didn't care so much for this book...partially because they felt Connor was flat and maybe he was...generally speaking. However, when he is placed among his friends, he becomes the one who is different from them. He's not big on the kink factor but wants to show a woman how it feels to be truly loved. How can you not love a man like that? Plus, his reactions are just so damn funny.


Maya has created a great group of characters who love each other and, while they may tease and torment, they are always there for each other. Let it be said...there are no secrets within this group of friends. They make life...interesting, to say the least.


Honestly...I can't think of a single thing I didn't like about this book. I read way to late and had to suppress my laughter so that I didn't wake anyone up. Everyone has a different need from a book and when I read Sweet Passion, I suppose I needed the humor.

Here are a couple of my favorite parts...

"I don't like you," she finally said.
To his utter horror, he went hard.
He smiled then. A lazy, "I don't give a fuck" grin. It was either that or groan at his growing discomfort and he'd eat nails before allowing her to know how affected he was by her. "The feeling, Ms. Jones, is entirely mutual." pg 19

"What the ever-loving hell?" Kane said from across the room.
"Hang on a second, Gray."
Connor put the phone down to his leg and frowned over at Kane, who was looking out the window. "Something wrong?"
Kane turned around, his lips twitching. "Depends on whether you consider a pool full of naked girls a bad thing." pg 165

Patti Roberts has written a stunning and shocking novella that delves into the age old question of what awaits us after we die. Or more importantly, what guides the events that spins the world. Paradox provides a unique view of Angels and those they protect?!?! As always...let's take a look at these captivating beings:

• Abbadon - is an important player in the on-going war between the House of the Bulguardians and the House of the Grigorians. Problem is...he plays for the bad guys, the rebellions...the Grigorians.
• Cerberus - is the leader of the House of the Grigorians.
• Thieria - is the younger sister of Abbadon and Cerberus. She is tired of being treated like a little girl and will seek to solve this problem.
• Pandora - is Cerberus's wife. She has few fans in the Grigorian family.
• Brian - is the father of a very special little girl. His duty is to protect her, before and after his life on Earth ends.
• Grace - has a special role to play on Earth. She is guarded...and wanted by many.
• Kate - is Grace's grieving mother. Kate spends much of this book trying to recover from a terrible loss and Grace is forced to take care of herself and her mom.

I am a sap for anything that brings me to tears...and this book did just that. Death of a loved one is always a difficult situation to address and Patti does it so beautifully. I don't think many of us stop to think about the fact that if good angels exist...that it is entirely possible for evil angels to exist. This novella definitely gives you something to think about.

While I truly enjoyed this book, I was left feeling a little confused. It was sometimes difficult to follow the back and forth between past and present. I am hoping that the next installment will include more insight. I am definitely looking forward to the rest of this series.

  The Blood of My World Trilogy is a set of three stories revolving around life after death and the consequences of decisions between love and family. The romance between the characters isn't a "we just me and fell immediately in love" scenario. Rose and Zach had been together long before Zach mysteriously disappeared and when she finds him...well, let's just say a few things have changed.
  
  While I loved all types of vampires, sparkly ones included, I really enjoyed Mr. Fuchs' take on these creatures of the night. He allowed Zach to experiment with different aspects of vampirism, eventually forcing him to realize exactly what he is and how he will have to survive.
  
  Mr. Fuchs places Rose in some very precarious situations and watching her respond is both heart-wrenching and amazing. She is faced with death, loss, lies, and then, life after death and the truth about the lies. I'm not sure how I would have responded being in her shoes.
  
  These books are written in third person allowing you to see each character's thoughts and feelings. They were perfectly paced with enough action and mystery to keep the pages turning. The characters were charismatic, complicated, and sometimes downright horrible. They left you wondering about their intentions and actions, keeping the distinct possibility that almost anything could happen.
  
  I only have one complaint. Even though I loved the characters; at times I felt like there were too many of them being thrown at me. Other than that, an excellent tale of the Supernatural.

I had never read any of the Dark-Hunter Novels until I won Retribution in a contest. Now I am completely hooked. This book is a dynamic mixture of mythology and seduction. Ms. Kenyon's narration is strong and brings you into her fascinating world. And her characters...wow!

• Jess "Sundown" Brady - fierce, funny, dangerous, and sexy. He is like my ultimate Bad Boy crush right now. Not only is he a kick-ass Dark-Hunter but he has a devotion to Abigail that is heated and steadfast. He would literally die for her.
• Abigail Yager - is on a hunt for her arch nemesis, the man who killed her parents. And this man would be the infamous "Sundown" Brady. When she finds him, the only thing she plans on doing is killing him; if only it were that simple.
• Choo Co La Tah - while being the Guardian of the North, he will guide Jess and Abigail on their journey to saving the world...hopefully.
• Ren Waya - is the best friend of Choo Co La Tah and has a tormented past. He is snarky and moody and sometimes, just plain mean. But I loved him.
• Sasha - is the last remaining Were-Hunter, that we know of. His powers of sniffing out the truth prove to be a great asset to Jess and Abigail in their time of need. Plus he is funnier that crap.
• Coyote - is the Guardian of the East and now since the balance has been thrown off, he will release terrors on the world of horrific proportions. He may finally have Ren right where he wants him.
• Talon - a Dark-Hunter who has powers to manipulate the weather.
• Andy - is Jess's high maintenance Squire.  An invaluable resource to any Dark Hunter.

Abigail has always wanted revenge on the man who killed her parents and now she has the power. As she sets out on a path of destruction, she sets things in motion that can't be undone. As she plows her way toward Jess Brady, she kills any Dark-Hunter that she can find. However, when she kills someone that holds extreme power over the safety of the world, her life becomes forfeit. Oddly enough, it will be the man she seeks Retribution from that sets her free.

The romance between Jess and Abigail is endearing, hot and believable. I've always wanted a man like Jess. He manages to protect Abigail and let her have her freedom at the same time, even though it goes against his ingrained chivalry.  


Not only do I adore Ms. Kenyon's mythology but I love everything and all things philosophical. She peppers her story with quotes from Nietzsche and Plato. That being said, here are two of my favorite scenes -

He enjoyed watching her love him, watch the light in her eyes that touched a part of him he liked to pretend didn't exist. It made him remember long forgotten things that he'd buried deep inside..

 Q.It's that pesky magic book fairy again! She has another wish: What imaginary book world would you like to make a reality?  Answer: Hmmm... This is a tough one. I have read so many amazing books that fascinate me. I'm going to have to choose two on this one. And they are complete opposites... I would love to live in Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instrument Series. They completely kick-ass! Clary and Isabel rock! And then there's Jace. I would really like to meet Magnus in the real world. So many amazing ventures and so many fantastical creatures (okay, and a little scary.)
And then, I would love to live in Amy Plum's Die For Me world because it is romantic and supernatural. I love her revenants and Paris? Who could refuse Paris?

Ok, this one may get me in a little trouble on this one, but I read this article yesterday and was wondering what the blogging/reading world thinks about it.

I receive a daily digest from Publisher's Weekly. Yesterday there was an article written by two published authors who co-wrote a post-apocalyptic novel with 5 different view points. You can find the full article HERE. One of the characters was openly gay. When the authors approached an agent...

"The agent offered to sign us on the condition that we make the gay character straight, or else remove his viewpoint and all references to his sexual orientation."

 Author Rachel Manija Brown had this to say:

“Making a gay character straight is a line in the sand which I will not cross. That is a moral issue. I work with teenagers, and some of them are gay. They never get to read fantasy novels where people like them are the heroes, and that’s not right.”

How do I feel about LGBT characters in YA Literature?

Well, personally I find it refreshing that ALL types of individuals are portrayed as heroes and recognized by society. Whether you believe it is right or wrong, there have been dire consequences for many individuals struggling in these lifestyles. No one should have to resort to suicide or other forms of self-mutilation because they feel different. 

Putting these characters in books gives teens a sense of being understood and recognized. And, being a teenager is a difficult part of life...why make it any harder by not acknowledging their feelings.

We are afraid of what we do not understand and fear leads to hatred.

Stolen is the third book in Jodie's Song of the Sidhi Series and it is the first one I have had the immense pleasure of reading. Now I am going to have to read Forbidden Temptation of a Vampire and A Dragon's Dream of Love. Jodie creates an unique world of Vampires and other Fantastical creatures, unlike anything I have ever read. Her characters are fun and intriguing as they take on puberty in there own special way.

• Katrina - is a beautiful vampire who went from a stick to a curvy young woman in about 3 weeks. She misses her best friend, as he has avoided her since she went through puberty. When her body signals her lifeMate she is ecstatic. Until...
• Eric - is the boy next door. He is a couple years younger than Katrina, but they have been friends since she was 10. He has yet to go through puberty so he is finding Katrina's maturity unsettling to say the least.
• Clarisse - is the evil girl who is looking for revenge. She is willing to break one of the most precious covenants of the Vampires in order to fulfill her hatred of Katrina.
• Jared - is one of Katrina's cousins who is willing to help her free Eric of a destiny that was not meant for him.
• Nick - is another of Katrina's cousins who supports her and her plan. Eventually.

Man, I really wish I had known about these books before. The passion in this book is different from the instant love you read about in so many other works of fiction. This species has a true soul mate. A single soul mate and if something happens to interfere with this natural phenomenon, the soul mates would be forced to live life without ever having a bonded mate. Their bodies "sing" for their lifeMates. When this happens, no one can interfere without causing dishonor to themselves and their families.

The story is told from Katrina's point of view, allowing you into her world and her intense feelings. Jodie, does however, build her world so that you feel the emotions of Eric and Clarissa also. Katrina is a very strong protagonist who knows how to get what is hers. A definite must read for those who enjoy fantastical worlds and unusual characters.

Two of my favorite quotes:

He chuckled. The deep, rumbling sound of his changed voice startled him and he boomed with laughter. Hot damn! He'd been so worried about so many other things, primarily Trina, he hadn't noticed how big he'd grown.

His heart raced. Leaning down, he kissed my neck, licking the pulsing vein.

Slowly, once, twice. By the third lick, my body was simmering with need. With each slow lick, my body shuddered under the onslaught of my mate's touch....My core heated from a simmer to a slow burn. I squirmed under the lenght of his body, feeling him grow hard in response to my movements. I slid my hands across the hard surface of his chest, relishing in the feel of his satiny skin.

I know, I know. Again with the love scenes. Get used to it!

• John – is Lia’s foster father. After the loss of his wife, he turned to alcohol. He spent his days working on the ranch and nights drinking.
• Ramira – happens to be Emi’s grandmother who holds powers out of this world and when she dies, her powers will be passed on to another female in the family. One who may cause more harm than good.
• Fenix – is Emi’s older brother, who she thinks the world of. After their father died, he took over all the ranch business.
• Galiliani Wahya – (Ani) is Ryan’s aunt whose unique talent at interpreting dreams becomes a invaluable gift and holds the secret to helping Lia learn who she truly is.
• Lyle – is one of Emi’s other brothers who has been dealt a truly bad hand in life. His love for Lia is enduring and almost makes him likeable. Almost.
• Adam – the long lost love of someone Lia is close to. He poses a threat to actions those around Lia have set in motion and these people are desperate to see them through.

The Rising Moon is a wonderful love story weaved together with tradition and mythology. I love Indian mythology, and the way Nilsa combines it with the world of fantasy is quite unusual.The darkness of the story is what drew me in and captivated me through its entirety. The characters make a known presence from page one but continue to grow in complexity throughout the book.

The story is told from Lia’s point of view allowing you to feel everything she feels, including her intense fear, pain and occasional pleasure. The writing flows well, though, sometimes I felt certain words were used repetitively. At times Lia’s character was a little uncertain and weak; however, she became stronger and more independent as the story progressed. By the end, I felt she was a pretty terrific protagonist.

Here are a couple of my favorite scenes...this was hard, because there were a ton of really great scenes.

"It's you!" she shouted rabidly, pointing her crooked finger at me. She turned her attention to Emi and her brothers. "Can't you fools see that Zaria's returned? Don't you know if she's here, Adam will be too? You must destroy her before it's too late!"

Tears streamed down my face as I flew into his arms. He ran his fingers along the line of my back with a gentle rhythm that pushed past the pain and fear. Altogether the tears stopped. He wrapped his arm around my waist and drew me closer to him. His hand moved up my arm and gently caressed my blushing cheeks. I gazed into his beautiful clear blue eyes and for the first time in my life, I knew what falling in love felt like.

Everyone who knows me, already knows I am a sucker for a good love scene!

What were you doing on 9/11

As we mourn the loss of the thousands of people on the 10th Anniversary of  9/11, I am compelled to remember each moment of that morning.

I don’t watch the news, you see, because all I ever see are the horrible stories and, though I know they happen, I choose to live in a world where good things happen too. This being the case, I had no idea what was going on that morning as my husband and I took two of our children to school. It wasn’t until we had dropped them off at the school and were headed home that we learned of the tragedy that would set in motion 10+ years of war.

I remember it like it was yesterday. We were headed home, the radio station we listen to broke in with an emergency message. This is when I learned that the Pentagon had been hit; still unaware of the Twin Towers. My immediate response was to rush right back to the school, load my children back up, and take them home. But…I am not that mom. You see, my son had cerebral palsy and he was 4 at the time. School was his life. He loved being with the kids and his sister. We had dealt with trauma and life-threatening illnesses since the day he was born, so I was tough…strong, if you will. And…I too had school to attend on this day. So, I forced myself to go on as if it were a somewhat normal day and let the kids have their day also.

When we got home, of course we went straight to the TV and watched replay after replay until I left for school. Once there, my friend and I went to our Anatomy and Physiology course. One of the most heinous and dreaded coursed of any nursing student alive today. There was a strange foreboding sense of doom in the air. Everyone had their cell phones out checking the coverage. Our professor was late; an odd occurrence to say the least. When he finally shuffled in nearly half an hour later, his eyes were rimmed in red and his hair was amuck. It seems his daughter was on assignment at the Pentagon on that horrific day. He had been in his office attempting to somehow contact her. A nearly impossible feet. He finally received an email from her and she was okay, but due to the circumstances, class would be dismissed for the day.

A & P was my first class of the day and it started about 9:30ish or so. Most of my other nursing friends had been on campus since 7:30 or so. They had not yet heard or seen the news. It was a surreal experience telling people who did not know, how could they not know? I was amazed that no professor or other classmates had told them, but now, news was traveling fast. The rest of the day was spent in a fog. I’m not really sure how much we actually absorbed from classes that day.

Later that same day, I had an interview at a local hospital. I was completely shocked when I had to let them search my purse. Really? I was awaiting the Director of Nursing to call me back and decided to watch some more of the story unfold. Each and every time I see any footage of that day, my eyes burn and become teary. This is why I chose the beautiful picture of the Twin Towers for this post. When I finally went into the interview, we talked more about what had happened that day, than about my self or my skills. I got the position though.

The thing I want to remember today is that thousands of policemen, firemen, and emergency medical personnel showed up at Ground Zero and throughout the area to do what they could for everyone directly involved in the attack. And, whether you agree with the war or not, never forget that our soldiers sacrifice themselves to protect the rights that were given to us when The United States of America was formed.

9/11 brought people of all races, nationalities, social statuses, ages, and any other deviation you can think of together. Let us remember that we CAN work together to make the WORLD a better place. We just have to put aside our differences and accept each other as we are.
