EXCERPT:

I hadn’t been asleep long when the creaking sound of a door nearby startled me awake. I lay still, listening. After hearing the extremely slow, almost non-existent heartbeat downstairs, I figured William had come back.

I had just rolled over and closed my eyes again when something jerked me from the bed by my hair and threw me across the room. My back slammed against the wall, leaving a large busted place in the plaster. I slid down the wall, shook my head to clear it, then jumped up and scanned the room. I tried to see my attacker, but couldn’t.

An icy hand grabbed my arm and hurled me through the window, glass shattered all around me. I hit the lower roof and rolled. I scrambled, trying to grasp anything to stop my fall, forgetting I couldn’t die. My hand caught the gutter, but as my body fell over the edge, the metal broke away from the house, sending me head first onto the brick patio below. When I hit the ground I landed on my arm and shoulder. The impact dislocated my elbow and jammed a large jagged piece of glass through the back of my shoulder.

After I jumped to my feet, I popped my elbow back in place, and pulled out the chunk of glass, sickened by the soft sucking sound it made. Bright red liquid oozed from the cut as it started to heal. Trying to spot my attacker, I inhaled deeply through my nose. They were definitely close by. I couldn’t see anyone, but I could damn sure smell them. They reeked of rotting tissue and death, which turned my stomach. A vampire could withstand many things, but puss-filled blood wasn’t one of them.

The brightness of the new day and the heat from the sun drained my strength. I think my attacker had known it. I eased backward in the direction of the house, making sure not to let my guard down while I headed for shade. By the time I reached the back door, I felt sure whoever tried to kill me had gone as the stench had disappeared.

An uneasiness overwhelmed me. Why would someone attack me and then run away when they clearly had gotten the better of me? I couldn’t fight what I couldn’t see.

My head snapped to the side when I heard tires squealing. I couldn’t tell if they were coming or going until I heard a door slam and the sound of William’s voice call my name. I grabbed the knob, but found the back door locked.

“William. I’m out here,” I yelled, and banged on the door. He must have heard my racing heart and known I was in trouble. I heard him scream my name.

He yelled my name one last time before he snatched open the back door.

“Oh William, thank God you’re here. Something attacked me.” I wrapped my arms tightly around his waist, thankful he’d gotten back.

William didn’t bother to hold me. Instead, he reached behind his back and grabbed my hands, then jerked me inside the house. His massive grip made my arms throb, but nothing could hurt nearly as bad as the words he spoke. “What did you do, Genevieve?” His eyes turned a terrifying black, again, and the look on his face said he wanted to kill me. His gaze flitted between my eyes and my hands, then he released me. He spun on his heel and stormed into the kitchen.

{Introduction} Meet the Blogger--Kelly Coffee

Hello to all you wonderful followers. If you've noticed that blogs and reviews have been a little slow lately, it's because our wonderful BlogMistress has been somewhat short on time due to other personal projects. She is graciously allowing me the change to broaden my own horizons by taking my reviews from just Goodreads and Amazon and being a regular reviewer on Better Read than Dead. Since you're probably going to be seeing a fair amount of me, I thought I'd introduce myself.

My name is Kelly Coffee and I currently work in the retail industry full time as a pseudo-supervisor (all the work, none of the perks). I am the mother of the world's most adorable little boy (no, not biased at all) who is two and a half at the time of this post, and have a wonderful husband who finds amusement in all of my character flaws and keeps me from taking myself too seriously. I have my Bachelor Degree in East Asian Languages and Literature from the University of Pittsburgh (Japanese emphasis) and am conversationally fluent. I also have an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts--and that's the one that more applies to this line of work, as I describe it as my reading/writing/literature mini-degree.

Lately, a friend has helped me renew my love of reading and showed me the fun and rewarding world of reviewing, beta reading and editing. I only have one work of note currently on my resume, that's Ms. Robin P. Waldrop's Ties to the Blood Moon. (cover image via goodreads.com)

You may have noticed it featured on a giveaway a few months ago. Lately, it's done really well, even getting to #2 in kindle fantasy, so my passion for this side reading is fully inflamed right now.

But onto the things you'll get the most from me--the reviews. My favorite genres are Fantasy and Sci-Fi, hands down. I also enjoy YA fiction and my ultimate guilty pleasure--slash (male/male romance for the uninitiated). Those genres are not exclusive, however. As I've been doing read/reviews for indie authors since about January, I have found that just because something isn't my usual cup of tea doesn't mean it isn't a)worth reading and b) something that I can't enjoy. I've read a number of self-published works that have blown me away and been outside of my normal sphere because the reads were requested. It's a process I've enjoyed immensely. I have tried to keep my queue in check with the requested reviews (and try to balance it with my traditional want-to-reads and editing).

As for what I look for in a book, I am extremely character-focused. You can have the saddest excuse for a plot in the world and if you have well-developed, fleshed out, interesting characters I care about, I'm going to enjoy your book. Conversely, you can have a critically acclaimed best seller, and if I can't connect to your characters and don't care about them, I'm not going to enjoy your book. Your beautiful prose, your intricate plotting, your politics and your world mean nothing to me if I don't care about the people in it. I may be able to recognize they are there, but I won't enjoy your book.

My three favorite authors (in no particular order) are Sherrilyn Kenyon, Laurell K. Hamilton and Tamora Pierce. I plan on helping out Kristin with her Series Sundays and this Sunday plan on hitting Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series, so I won't go into them any further for now. I like vampires, but I'm touchy about how my shape-shifters are done.

When writing reviews, I try to be critical--what was done well, what I responded well to, and any issues I had. I am usually able to separate a personal distaste or disconnect from a book from the actual delivery of the book as a whole. I realize that just because *I* didn't like a character (say Harry Dresden), doesn't mean that other people won't.

So, it is my pleasure to provide reviews and blogs for your perusal. I do post reviews on Goodreads and Amazon and would be happy to post them elsewhere upon request. If you would like to request a review, you can message me at goodreads.com/kellycoffee

And as I'm sure you're all quite sick of me, I leave you with my preferred valediction:

A toast to a story better than the one before.

{Giveaway and Book Tour} Ties to the Blood Moon by Robin P Waldrop

Welcome to the Ties to the Blood Moon Virtual Book Tour hosted by Bree @ The Magic Attic. Today, I have the privilege of showing you the first excerpt from the first installment of Robin P Waldrop's enticing tale about mythical creatures and ancient lore.

Excerpt - Prologue

Aunt Bev kept telling me it wasn’t my fault. But, if I had waited one more day before leaving to spend spring break with her in Alaska, I would have been home to pull my mother from the burning house. I knew my aunt meant well, but it hadn’t helped with my dreams for the past two weeks. Or should I say, nightmares?

As soon as I lay down and closed my eyes, the same scene filled my mind over and over again. Almost like a memory. I was in the woods just outside my house and helplessly watched a huge ferocious dog-like creature circling my house while it burned. At first glance the animal appeared to be red, but as I continued to stare, the color of his fur shifted like dancing flames. My home was on fire and I looked helplessly on, listening to my mother’s screams coming from somewhere inside. I knew I had to save her, but I was afraid.

“Mom,” I screamed, and started to rush for the house when the beast noticed me and snarled. I froze, unable to move. His yellow eyes glowed as if they reflected the fire behind him and I saw his blood-stained fangs.

I quickly ran away from the house. Away from saving my mother from the hungry flames that consumed her. I glanced to either side as I ran and saw the faint reddish glow of several other dogs through the trees. They had joined the first dog in the pursuit of his prey.

My lungs burned as the woods ignited behind the dogs, forcing me to run faster or be consumed by the same fire that claimed my mother’s life. I skidded to a stop at the edge of a cliff and spun around to face the pack of wild beasts as one by one they emerged from the burning trees and approached me. They appeared to be almost smiling.

I had two choices—each of them a death sentence. I chose the latter and leaped from the cliff. The dogs peered over the edge as I fell away from them. They seemed disappointed with my choice. As they moved away out of sight I looked below and saw the ground rushing up at me.

Right before impact I woke up and realized I was still falling. I hit the hardwood floor beside my bed and cried out.

That's enough to make you want to read the book...right? Well, were not done yet...check out this awesome book trailer and then enter for a chance to win an ebook of Ties to the Blood Moon.
