{A Kelly McGeer Review}: Life Eternal by Yvonne Woon

Title: Life Eternal
Series: Dead Beautiful #2
Author: Yvonne Woon
Genre: YA Paranormal
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion

Synopsis:

Renée Winters has changed. When she looks in the mirror, a beautiful girl with an older, sadder face stares back. Her condition has doctors mystified, but Renée can never reveal the truth: she died last May, and was brought back to life by the kiss of her Undead soul mate, Dante Berlin.
Now, her separation from Dante becomes almost unbearable. His second life is close to an end, and each passing day means one less that she will spend with the boy who shares her soul.
Just when Renée has almost given up hope, she learns of the Nine Sisters--brilliant scholars who, according to legend, found a way to cheat death. She can't shake the feeling that they are somehow connected to her dreams, strange visions that hint at a discovery so powerful, and so dangerous, that some will stop at nothing to protect it.
Renée thought she knew the truth about life and death. But there is a secret woven through history that holds the only hope for Dante and Renée. Unless they find answers soon, their time together is doomed to be cut short.

I added both covers because I like the UK cover better. hehe. Ah Dante how I have missed thee. That is exactly how I felt when I finally got my hands on a copy of Life waiting for this book for ages!!! This is one of the most interesting concepts that I have read in a very very long time. Basically the story is centered on Rene Descartes lost Seventh Meditation that he wrote right before he died. This particular Meditation was about the myth of immortality and how he had discovered it. Here is a short summary of what he hypothesized:

If a child, under the age of 21, dies and is not given a proper burial, they will wake up again but without their soul. They are given another 21 years to search for their soul, which has been born into another person. They then have to suck out their soul in order not to die for a second time. Interesting right???? I love this concept so much and the storyline is amazing.

In Life Eternal, Renee and Dante are searching for a cure to save Dante from dying which is eternal life, since he cannot retrieve his soul. It is in the person he refuses to take it from.  They are searching for the nine sisters since they were rumoured to be the keepers of the secret to immortality.

What I didn’t like was how both Renee and Dante kept secrets from each other. If they were just honest, most of their problems wouldn’t have happened, but I guess then there wouldn’t be much of a book right? Anyway Dante was in way too little of the book for my taste. I love him too bits and I was having major withdrawal!

This entire book was so gripping and amazing. I couldn’t put it down! Most of the time I was screaming at the book to reveal its secrets too me!! You can’t believe how many twists and turns are thrown at you in this book and that is what I love! I need to be kept guessing.

And oh sweet Lord that cliffhanger! It is the worst one I have ever experienced. Like I literally thought I had pages missing!!! This is a definite must read if you want a soul-wrenching, freak out inducing, arms flailing story.

  1. Great review! I love this series. I really am surprised it doesn't have more hype than it does. Can't wait for the next one!

  2. Have you read Alyson Nöel's Immortals series? Is it similar to this? The premise.sounds intriguing but the soulmate thing is giving me a different gibe.

    1. Yes I have and I did not like the series to be honest. It is not the same and they are not soul mates. She just has his soul in her body. They shouldnt even be in love. So it's not a soul mate thing at all :)
